1979

David was born at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on January 06, 1979 at 6:32 am.  He weighed 7 lbs and 7 oz.  He was such a beautiful baby.

We named him David Oliver Nelson.  His father's name is Donald and this way his initials spelled DON.  Oliver was chosen because it was his Grandpa Carl's middle name.

David's big sister, Chris, loved her new little brother so much.  She couldn't keep her hands off of him.  I would often find her climbing into David's crib so that she could put his head on her lap just to hold him.

When David was almost eleven months old, we gave him another sister, Sara, to love and be loved by.

Happy Fourth of July!

This was always David's favorite day.  He had a fun filled day planned this year for the whole family.

First stop, Ralston's Parade - David and Kaden picked Dad and me up.  We went to Aunt Marlene's where she had saved a place on the corner down the street for us. He drove his black Caprice and I was so nervous riding through the narrow streets in that big 'boat' but it didn't bother David.  He just found his way talking to his Dad about the cars they saw along the way.

Once settled in our spot, David was ready for the fun!
  ROCK ON!
The parade lasted 3 hours but he stayed on the curb with the kids the whole time.

Next stop - Grandma Schram's.  David loved to cook.  He did the barbecuing for both our family and Jen's family.  It was so-o-o good.

Finally, the fireworks!  I never saw so many fireworks.  Although there were several people lighting them off, you knew David was the man in charge.

2007
David passed away on April 12, 2007 at the age of 28.

The night of his death I barely slept.  I truly believe in a loving and caring God but because of my upbringing in a time where suicide was considered a mortal sin I feared so much for David's soul.  I needed to know that he was all right.  I prayed all night for a sign to let me know that he was safe.  In the morning my prayers were answered.  I got up before daylight and turned on the kitchen light.  The light has three ballasts and the center one has not been working for a long time.  That morning when I turned on the light the two outer lights did not come on but the middle one did.  My first reaction was..I don't need this!... but almost as soon as I thought that I started shaking.  God answered my prayers.  My middle child has found the light.  Once we turned the light off only the outer ones came back on.  The center one has not come back on to this day.  Thank you, God, this sign has helped me so much.  Each time I look at the lights, I am comforted.

The days prior to the funeral were filled with so many things to do.  First, the plans for his burial.  Everyone agreed that we were looking for a dark brown casket that matched his first car, his cherished '79 Malibu.  The mortuary brought in several samples before we found the right one.
His dad put the finishing touches on it when he placed 'Malibu' emblems on each side of his casket.  (If you saw me laughing during his Mass, it was because Dave's dad nudged me and showed me a dent on the back of his coffin just like on his car.  Was Dave showing his dad that he approved?)  We then found a beautiful resting place on a grass covered hill at Calvary where someday his dad, myself and his godmother can rest beside him.

The girls kept busy collecting pictures and making collages for the visitation.  Chris, Sara and Jen did a wonderful job with the support of David's friends, Todd and Dan.  Aunt Julie spent her time putting together the memorial video which can be found in the Audio & Video section.

David's six year year old nephew , Tyler,  made the following picture to send with his Uncle Dude.  It is Dave in first place.  It has a really big spoiler because according to Tyer, it makes it the fastest.  What affected me most by this picture was the finish line, he used gold glitter...like the gates of heaven.

David was laid to rest at Calvary Cemetary, Station XI, Row 21, Lot 14, on April 16, 2007 following a beautiful Mass at Assumption Church celebrated by Father Jim Keiter.

The moment that touched me most was at the cemetary.  There was a cart next to the road to place the casket on to roll it to the grave but it was not used.  The pallbearers who were four of his friends, Vince, Todd, Jason and Dan and his two cousins, Garrett and Grant, wanted to carry it instead.  Their wish to be there for Dave and carry him all the way to the end has meant so much to me.  I love you guys!

Finally, I want to thank you, God, for lending David to us for those twenty-eight years.  We had some rough times but there were so many more good times that I will cherish forever.  I know he is now in good hands with You.  As we continue to pray for our David, please watch over him and let him know how much we loved him.
